The session kicked of with the housekeeping and then a short talk on emotional hygiene. This was followed by a short exercise on positivity.

Thereafter, Peter Warden from St Paul's Church, The Ridgeway, Mill Hill (whose connection is via our volunteer, Theresa) took over, performing a Sing-along (karaoke). Members were given lists of songs from which they chose songs. During this time, a wrapped parcel was passed around and at the stop of the music the holder was asked to open it following failed guesses at identifying the mystery object which turned out to be a table clock.

This was in tune with the day's learning point; time for a makeover to being more positive and happy. Interestingly, from a list of 31 songs, the 5 recommended were all chosen by members, confirming that those were their favourites!

  • What Shall We Do With a Drunken Sailor
  • It's a Long Way to Tipperary
  • Que Sera Sera
  • That's Amore
  • You are My Sunshine

Richard was on hand to follow up with Yoga exercises and emphasised the need to continue to have a positive disposition , incorporating what he called happy yoga. Everyone participated in these exercises . The last few minutes were reserved for games. However, the ball throwing and passing was dropped after a few minutes and the remaining time was spent by Eleanor delivering a quiz on popular proverbs.

Although it was pounding with rain today it was amazing to see so many members arrive. I announced a few coming events and distributed the new program.

The session followed with Kevin who took the quiz. Everyone always enjoy quizzes with Kevin as he makes them laugh. Richard then arrived and the session followed with chair Yoga.

I finished with reading a few jokes which everyone enjoys and then a little sing-along and dancing. Everyone left with a smile.

My thanks to my volunteers Eleanor, Melvyn, Dr Angela and we also had a new volunteer today Chris who came from St Michael's Greek Orthodox Church in Golders Green. He heard me speak on Sunday to the congregation and wanted to attend the session.

Pat and Sandra from the Rotary Club of Elstree and Borehamwood were session leaders today as Sasha was on holiday. There were 10 members today.

It was a pleasure to see Marion again from Tesco Borehamwood volunteering to help. It was also a pleasure to see our new DCUK GP Doctor Rebecca Hatjiosif. A few of the members had their blood pressures taken and also wanted to discuss some medical concerns.

I also provided advice and information to a few of the carers that approached me.

Pat started the session with a quiz. She gave members a copy of the new Town Crier magazine and they had to find the answers to the quiz from the magazine. Members didn’t get a chance to finish as it was time for Sarah to do the exercises with the members which they always enjoy.

The session then followed with Clare the singer who came and entertained members getting them to sing and some of them to dance. It was a very enjoyable session.

Pat provided the answers to the quiz and then the last part of the session, members were introduced to a few games. There was Putting golf, darts with Velcro balls, Tin Can Alley (stack the tins and throw the bean bags), 2 packs of playing cards and skittles. The Putting golf was the favourite.

Thank you to all our volunteers including Marijke, Eleanor and Patrick.

Lisa was invited by Father Vasileios the priest in charge of the church to come and give a talk about dementia and her charity Dementia Club UK. Some of our members attended who gave out leaflets before Lisa started presenting. There was a lot of interest and questions asked afterwards whilst having a cup of tea later in the Church Hall.

We would like to thank Father Vasileios for inviting Lisa to speak and for hosting tea and sandwiches and cakes in the Church Hall after.

Lisa will be attending the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of The Holy Cross & St Michael on Sunday, 10th September 2017 at The Riding, Golders Green Road, NW11 8HL.

Lisa will talk at the end of the Service about dementia and how Dementia Club UK can help those suffering with dementia and their carers to receive the information and advice they need and also have a better quality of life.
