Haven Bistro & Bar in Whetstone sponsored Dinner for Dementia Club UK

We were delighted that Julius the owner of the The Haven Bistro & Bar in Whetstone sponsored a dinner with entertainment for guests of Dementia Club UK. We were entertained by singer James Bernard who sang Frank Sinatra ballads.

We would like to thank all the guests including the Deputy Mayor of Barnet Cllr Sury Kkatri and his wife Tara who attended. We would especially like to thank Julius and his staff for making this a successful evening which was enjoyed by all.

All proceeds of the dinner and raffle went to the Dementia Club UK charity.

We had 6 new members today as a result of the Dementia Awareness day (the previous day at Brent Cross Shopping Centre). Lisa brought the bag of 'goodies' from Boots at Brent Cross and arranged them on a table. There were a selection of cloth shopping bags, men's wash bags, ladies hand bags and lots of sample perfume testers. Members were very excited and pleased to receive them.

Eleanor Fretten did a music quiz with members - name the song, the artist and in some cases which musical it was from. All the members really enjoyed this and this will be repeated again soon. Lisa then continued with singing favourite songs which everyone sang along to, she finished the session with some jokes.

We held a Dementia Awareness Day for the third year at Brent Cross Shopping Centre during national Dementia Awareness Week. We were pleased to share our tables with Polly Frayne and Alison Hibbard from Alzheimer’s Society and Mark Robinson from Age UK. We thank them for their support.

Some of our volunteers and carers attended to help with the day including our new partners, the Rotary Club of Golders Green. The Mayor of Barnet and charity patron Theresa Villiers also attended.

We were nicely surprised to receive a "bag of goodies" from Uday Mistry the Deputy Manager & Ahmed Pre-registration Pharmacist of Boots who support Dementia as part of their charities. They asked us to distribute the 'goodies' to members and carers at one of our sessions.

Charity founder Cllr. Lisa Rutter said: “A lot of people approached us for advice and information and some people mentioned how they have been struggling looking after someone with dementia and were relieved to know that help is available."

“Dementia is now the biggest killer and whilst there is no cure, Dementia Club UK will continue to provide respite for dementia sufferers and their carers and to give them hope.”

Musicians aiding the cause included the Ionian Clarinet Quartet, part of the Ionian Clarinet Choir, they performed throughout the afternoon. We also had the the Zemel Choir, a mixed voice Jewish choir who sang twice a number of stirring songs.

The charity runs dementia cafes at five different venues across the borough and aims to expand to help more people.

We had a talk today by Dick Selby a Rotarian from The Rotary Club of Golders Green. He told some real life funny stories about a few of the marriages he performed when he was a registrar. There were some interesting questions from members and the of the stories you would not believe if you read in a newspaper. Members really enjoyed listening to the stories and had a good laugh.

We also had a visitor from Rotary London Hampstead, Utz Reiff who wanted to see the session as he was interested in getting his Rotary to do similar as The Rotary Club of Golders Green.

A big thanks to Dick for sharing his stories.

We had a nice email from Ruth Schwalb from Chelsea Square about a blog post on their company website and she has sent us the link. The blog goes on to say how much the volunteers enjoyed themselves on 27th April and has a number of photos of the session. Click on the link below.
